In his book Landmarks Robert MacFarlane describes the idea of "word-hordes", caches of local vocabularies for describing landscape, light and weather. This collection can be thought of as an image equivalent. The photography here is part of a project of walking and looking that is by now an essential part of me. The images try to grasp particular aspects seen, found, felt or experienced while traversing land and landscapes on foot.
The subjects of talismanic are predominantly found objects, some made by people, some not. They share a quality of perceived and resonant meaning. Some are ad hoc totems, some reveal a desire for myths of place. The talismans here can relate to both change and continuity. Some of the images are asemic - carrying a strong sense of an enfolded order, although their meaning remains unclear.
