In his book Landmarks Robert MacFarlane describes the idea of "word-hordes", caches of local vocabularies for describing landscape, light and weather. This collection can be thought of as an image equivalent. The photography here is part of a project of walking and looking that is by now an essential part of me. The images try to grasp particular aspects seen, found, felt or experienced while traversing land and landscapes on foot.
These shamanic images have a relationship with place, and often with cycles of change and growth. There are portals here, embodying ideas of possible or actual transition. Often there is a perception of underlying ritual, movement or purpose. The subjects are not of themselves unusual things or places, but there is an intuition that an almost magical intention is perhaps close, almost tangible, but not quite in plain sight.
